What has happened to CUSTOMER SERVICE!

Category: Marketing & PR Strategies You Might Try

Published: Friday, March 05, 2010

This past week I experienced two nightmares in customer service and really could not believe how bad it has gotten.  I would think in these times that building relationships with customers would be something that is more important than ever, but that does not seem to be the case. In fact yesterday at an event I mentioned my blog this month would be on Customer Service and many of the people I talked with agreed it has gone totally downhill.

First thing that happened is that I made contact with a company in the East that gives out ISBN numbers for books. A client of mine had in the past ordered ten numbers, used three and somehow forgot the ones he had not used and needed them.  For over two weeks emails went back and forth  from  me to them with responses that offered no help, just the same story each time which was not working, and then when I did communicate with them by phone, they gave us some incorrect information again.and when I called and left a voice mail to call me back with the correct information they never did. By this time I was totally frustrated and then a member from the clients staff called  them and was on the phone over 1 1/2 hours just to get someone to talk to them and still did not get the matter resolved.  It's  apparent this company did not seem to even be interested that we also wanted to purchase ten more numbers which would of been some revenue to them. So we are still working on getting this resolved.

The second case was that I have been helping a member of one of my For You/NAFE networks that had a stroke in November get some needed paperwork completed to help her with her medical, since she has no family in the US and no Health Insurance. She was in the hospital over two months and then moved to a nursing home two months ago, the Social workers in Sacramento who work for the State are trying to help her get medicare. They needed some forms completed by her doctor's and sent me some forms to get completed and then get faxed back to them .I  thought this should not be a big problem. My first step was to take them to the Nursing Home, they had no administrator there, so talked with Director of Nursing ,who passed me on to someone else, who passed me on to the records administrator who told me I had to take it to her doctor.  I told them it would be great if we knew who her doctor was as she had been in the hospital over two months and other than in the emergency room saw a doctor only once for about 5 minutes, and then since she has been in the nursing home over 2 months another doctor stepped into her room for about 5 minutes so you can see why she had no idea who her doctor is.  The records person told me the names of the two five minute doctors, and gave me their local office number which I called, They reviewed the files and told me to take it to their other office in another town. So I drove to that office, and when I got there they told me she was not a patient and I said yes she was, so  the gal at the window talked to the doctor and he said take the forms back to the Nursing home and have them put in her chart and next time we are over there which was not going to be soon they could then do an examination and do the forms. He had no idea as to when that would be, but said it would not be soon, and so would not take the forms. I  just could not believe their attitude about a woman who needs their help to get her paperwork done so she can get coverage but I guess because she has no insurance they can't waste their time on her. She is a human being and I believe needs to be treated like one, I hate to think what would happen to this woman if it was not for me and other members of our For You/NAFE networks who have jumped in to help her.

These forms are needed by the people in Sacramento to help them do their evaluation as to perhaps helping her get her coverage approved for emergency medicare, but it was very apparent these doctors did not care, especially since she has no medical coverage at this time.

When they say our medical system is broken I can tell you just helping this young woman who is only 58, who had a stroke and is now paralyzed on one side and seeing how she has been treated is a shock to me. I totally agree it is broken especially when you have doctors that don't care and will not take that extra moment to reach out and make a difference.

I am sure there are many horror stories out there of many cases like this. So the result is I am back to square one and have the forms unfilled, so I guess I will call Sacramento and tell them these doctors would not fill them out, maybe they will make a recommendation not to refer patients to them in the future and take them off their preferred list..

I am sure glad I am never sick as with doctors like these around I would prefer to just keep doing my natural vitamins to stay healthy.  Its a good think this woman has our group that is helping her or she totally would be out in the cold.

I can remember one time years and years ago when I left Hawaii with my family and moved to Bellevue, Nebraska, my daughter Lori was a baby and got really sick and I called a local doctor and he came to my house and made a house call, it was so nice,  but I guess those days are gone now.I wonder if any where in the US doctors still make house calls?  He was a great doctor and then years later when I moved to VA I had another doctor that made house calls.

How many of you have stopped into a store and see the clerks talking to one another and ignoring you?  I have had it happen to me a lot lately or the other thing is trying to find a clerk to wait on you. Customer Service in many of the retail environments are gone as well.

We have phone systems that make us punch so many buttons and then we still cannot talk to anyone, I think I liked the older days better when we had the human  voices that cared.

I believe in new things and new technology but I still think the old fashioned way of carrying about the customer was the best.  I am a National Speaker and I like being in a room with lots of people versus doing a training on line and yet I have done them, but when I do I miss the wonderful energy of togetherness that a room full of people generate.

I think we all need to look at what we are doing in dealing with our customers, are we making them feel important, are we listening to what they are saying, are we there when they need us, are we responding to their phone calls, emails etc. in a timely manner? It really is not about US,  but how we care for them that really matters.  Remember good customers will refer you out to their friends, business associates and become your biggest Fan so we need to pay attention and make them feel as if we care.

You can be assured that the company that would not help give me the information will not get promoted out by me to anyone, and those doctors I am going to tell everyone I meet that goes to them to get a new doctor . Its apparent to me these doctors surely do not care about making a difference and touching a life.  What they don't know is that I am connected to thousands and thousands of people and I SHOW UP everywhere,  so I can sure get the word out about their non existing Customer Service skills.

Do you take time to see how you are treating your customers, do you make them feel like you really care? I know its a different world and we are all busy, but a few minutes to answer a question, respond to an email or phone call and make the person on the other end truly believe you care is really important, and believe me if you treat them right they will treat you right as well.

So how would you rate your customer service skills?

Six companies I know that excel in customer service skills, since I deal with them a lot are : the Diva Toolbox. www.divatoolbox.com run by Janet Powers and Infinity Arts, www.infinityarts.com with Mike Hooper and Mandy , Flexiciser, Inc, run by Bryan S. J. Mallindine,  www.flexiciser.com.,

NAFE,  www.nafe.com run by Betty Spence, President, and American Seminar Leaders www..asla.com run by June Davidson, President..

Every connection  I have with those companies have been outstanding, no matter what time I contact them or what the question or whatever my need is they are right there to serve me, and all their other customers. They totally know the importance of great customer service. They answer their phones, respond to their emails, and listen and then respond back in a timely manner and deliver on their promises

So lets work together and get Customer Service back to what it used to be, if someone is not serving you let them know that you are not happy with their customer service and do not refer them to others, they will start to get the message and perhaps start looking at that side of their business better.

My mother has had the unfortunate need to be hospitalized several times over the past nine months. Each time we have encountered rude, disrespectfull and ambivelant behavior from some of the nursing staff. My mother has full complete insurance coverage, four different programs to be exact. So I fear it may not be the lack of money. We may be facing the distinction of good old-fashioned hospitalitiy. Whatever happened to teaching Emily Post in school? I believe we have poor customer servers today because yesterday someone forgot to pass along the basics in "ettiquette 101" Denise L. Cook, The ORACLE

This is a wonderful blog! Your observations are excellent and, sadly, all too common. You definitely fell into the “black hole” of bad customer service. This is what you should have experienced (and is what my customers experience) We literally drop everything to attend to our customers. We spend the time, ease their way, return their calls. I believe that you should always talk to a live person. Even the person who directs your call should know something that can be helpful to you. If we ever make a mistake we immediately correct it and issue an “OOPS” coupon. The customer ALWAYS has the benefit of the doubt. Our motto is, “Our customer service is second to none” and it pays off in ways that are beyond what money can buy. The reward is that we end up with customers as friends and friends are loyal. Maybe you can start a Customer Service Revolution, Robbie ~ You would have millions of members! Again, great blog!

Places YOU Might want to SHOW UP on line at. That can Help YOU Build YOU and YOUR Brand.

Category: Recent Articles

Published: Friday, February 05, 2010

Remember SHOWING UP is like a treasure map you never know what treasure you will find, and there are lots of ways to SHOW UP, so below are a few that I want to share with YOU!

Connecting with others that are doing great things is a good thing and another way of SHOWING UP. So be sure you are using social network like Twitter, Facebook, Plaxo, EAcademy, Linked In, and others as they also bring great results to get known.  I also wanted to share some other places you might want to think about checking up and doing.

Below are some different places that I personally have found work, so I wanted to share them with you in the event you might be interested. Each provides a way for you to get exposure and get known so check them out:

They are:

www.toiletpaperentrepreneur.com  Mike Michalowicz does a great BLOG, and what he does when you sign up with him FREE is that he sends out a Question that he is going to feature on his BLOG and you answer the question and if he selects your answer than your photo, name, company and website link appear with your answer so this is great exposure for YOU. His blog usually always goes to Number ONE on google so its a great opportunity to you to build YOU and YOUR brand.  He does the questions every few weeks and they are all related to business, which I know that everyone can have a great answer for. What is also great is that the people who send in the answers are also people that you want to meet and since you have a mutual connection you could contact them and learn more about them and perhaps how you can collaborate with them. He also is a great guy to know and is a great supporter of others.

Another site to connect to, where reporters and free lance writers post their needs that they are looking for its called Help A Reporter or HARO here is the link http://helpareporter.com/  You can sign up FREE and what happens is that twice a day you get emails listing queries of what freelance writers, reporters, radio and TV hosts and more  are looking for, and if your expertise is what they need then you respond to the query. Its really great and features lots of main stream media as well. What this means if you get selected you will appear in newspapers, magazine articles and/or on radio and television.  Great SHOW UP exposure here so check it out.

Having your own Blog is another great way to get exposure and click on the link above on my Blog and you can sign up to get information to go online to a FREE class that will give you some powerful information on Why YOU should have your own blog, and what it can mean for YOU...Also I highly recommend Infinity Arts as the company to help YOU set up your blog.  They are the best in my book and they are affordable. Their website is www.IAWebServices.com ask for Michael Hooper.

Having your own radio show is another way to build your brand.  I looked a long time before I found just the right place to do my show  "Success Secrets"  that I do the first Sunday of each month on Diva Tool Box Radio, Janet Powers who founded Diva Tool Box radio is great and she is right there to help you along the way, her hosts have been so great that Blog Talk Radio just gave Diva Tool Box their own radio network. This is not done often, and it is because the SHOWS and the HOSTS have been getting great audiences that love the shows and generating lots of traffic.  It is very inexpensive to set up your own show, you can do it Monthly, Weekly or bi-weekly. Janet helps you set it up, its affordable and you also get your own Host webpage here is the link to my host webpage  http://www.divatoolbox.com/diva-toolbox-radio-/hosts/1892-robbie-motter-diva-monthly-strategies-for-success.html that will give you some ideas of what you get on your host pages. My business partner and I love the Diva Tool Box Radio so much that we are going to start another show called Millionaire Mondays that will air the 2nd & 4th Mondays starting in March 2010 at 6pm PST.

Email Janet Powers and she will give you all the answers about doing a SHOW, and if you decide to do it let Janet know you heard about it from Robbie., Her email is Janet@divatoolbox.com.  Its also FREE to join her Diva Tool Box site and on it you have many opportunities including posting your articles.  Her site gets lots of traffic and she is a terrific person to know.

If you are looking for a great women's organization  that is the largest global women's group than I totally recommend NAFE, their website is www.nafe.com and the membership is only $39.00 a year.  I have been the NAFE Western & Mid Atlantic Regional Coordinator for NAFE for over 11 years and it really is a great organization for women, so check out their website and see if its for YOU.  If you live in the Southern CA area check out the NAFE Affiliate For You Networks their website is www.4younetwork.org.

IF you have been wanting to learn how to become a speaker which is another way of  SHOWING UP than I highly recommend contacting June Davidson the President of American Seminar Leaders at www.asla.com she trains and certifies seminar leaders and is the best, she has trained some of the top seminar leaders in the country.  In fact I had been speaking for years and took her course and got certified and learned so much more that helped to make me into a better speaker and since then I have been speaking globally.

She and I also partnered up to do a Speakers Bureau which I run, last year alone I had over 4,000 opportunities globally that I shared with our members. Below is some information on a Blast that ASLA just sent out to their database, so perhaps you have an interest in being a part of our ASLA/CONTACTS UNLIMITED Speakers Bureau, if so give us a call and sign up for the FREE tellers we will do.Here is what went out in  the Blast.

"Robbie  I have some exciting news.  I have been selected to be a guest blogger by the event team for the Front End of Innovation Europe.  I was notified yesterday late in the afternoon.http://www.iirusa.com/feieurope/keynote-speakers.xml Therefore, I will be flying to Amsterdam on Feb. 6th and return Feb. 13th. As a result I have to cancel my trip to LA as it falls on the same weekend.

You had a role to play in this. You are always saying just show up.  When the Front End of Innovation event organizer sent out a request for "professional bloggers" to submit a proposal to blog at this event, which you forwarded to me, I heard your words about showing up and although I had only been blogging six months and only learned about social networking five months ago I  sent in my form.  Then I was selected!  Can you  believe it? I know going to this event is going to open so  many doors for my creativity business  I will miss seeing you, but I must admit I will be having a fabulous time in Amsterdam." With great affection,,Connie Harryman, Creativity Expert, Speaker/Seminar Leader

My goal is to share with you opportunities to help you SHOW UP everywhere which will build you and your brand and make your business soar to greatness.

Until the next Blog...Remember that if you want to GO UP, YOU need to SHOW UP.

Dear Robbie:

I wish to thank you SO much for encouraging me to “Just Show UP!”.

I followed the advice you gave in one of your emails and on your blog, and joined the Diva Tool Box radio family.  At first it was difficult to fit the show into an already overloaded work schedule, but I remembered that I needed to Show Up!  So I forged ahead and did my shows.

NOW….the wonderful transition to Blog Radio occurred and I am in on it!  Just because I SHOWED UP!

Thank you, Robbie for the inspiration that you are to all of us in your world. I’m so thrilled about this new opportunity with Blog Radio. I owe it to your faithful nudging!

Much love,

SHOWING UP has certainly been something that has been happening this week in Haiti

Category: It's All About Showing Up Stories

Published: Friday, January 22, 2010

SHOWING UP has certainly been something that has been happening this week in Haiti, thank heavens for all the HEART people who are doctors, nurses, military, rescue workers, reporters, politicians, our world leaders and more, who have SHOWN UP to help this country and its people.

As I watched all that was going on I was wishing I could get on a plane and be there to do something, but since I do not fit in any of the categories above I felt the way I could help is to donate money and tell others to donate money, so I did that the night that Larry King was doing the show on CNN to raise the funds and he did get over 8 million dollars.  hat that has shown us all is that one person can start something and others will come in and support the cause.

As many of you that know me, know I wear many hats, and because I can balance many things I get to do many things. One that I recently got involved in is the formation of the Movement Therapy Foundation a 501 c3 non profit organization whose;

HOW TO WRITE A PRESS RELEASE

Category: Marketing & PR Strategies You Might Try

Published: Monday, January 11, 2010

The Basics

Apress release is a brief document generally 1 to 2 double-spaced, typewritten

pages used to disseminate information for publicity purposes to medial

        professionals.

A well written press release can gain increased visibility -- and sometimes

        credibility for your business.

Have you ever wondered by some companies get mentioned frequently? Or

why a particular business owner was profiled? Or why the newspaper never

calls you? Most of the time it's a matter of media relations. Someone has

effectively persuaded a journalist to portray his or her company, product,

or service in a positive light. Big corporations have an entire department

dedicated to this task or they have the resources to out-source the task

        to public relations firms.

As a small business owner or entrepreneur, you too can get recognition.

Public relations can help you increase you or your company's visibility in

the community, generate higher awareness for you and/or your company's news,

        and even assist in recruiting.

Unlike advertising, media relations deals with the editorial side of the press. And

unlike advertising, media relations is not something that you pay to put in the

paper or get on the radio.

Information is reported as news, based upon what the media feels is of

        importance to its audience.

What Is News?

The key to getting media coverage is to properly format and organize the information contained in your press release and come up with a newsworthy "angle" that makes it exciting or interesting to the editor.

An editor will usually consider several factors when he or she receives the press release:

Consequence: Does the information have any importance to the prospective reading, listening, or viewing public? Is it something the audience would pay to know?

Interest: Is the information unusual or entertaining? Does it have any human interest?

Timeliness: Is the material current? If it isn't, does it shed a new light on an old story?

Proximity: For most public relations people seeking to connect with the media, a local angle is often the only way to do it.

Prominence. Events and people of prominence frequently make the news. The problem, of course, is that your company president many not be as prominent to the media as he or she is to you.

If your story contains at lease one of the above elements, it most likely will be viewed as news by media professionals.

2010 A YEAR OF SUCCESS FOR ALL..

Category: Recent Articles

Published: Friday, January 08, 2010

Just finished my monthly radio show on Diva Tool Box Radio, www.divatoolbox.com which is called Strategies for Success. The show is heard live the first Sunday of each month at 6:00 PM PST and 9:00 PM EST and then other times in the other time zones, you can hear the show both by calling in or  go on line. Go to www.divatoolbox.com and click on radio hosts and then look for my name Robbie Motter on page 2, and click on it, and that takes you to my host page, you will find past shows archived there as well,  and also if you tune in the first Sunday of each month you can hear it live and ask questions of my guests.

My guest for January was  truly a success story, her name is Connie Harryman  and at the age of eight she was a Mexican American girl working alongside her impoverished  parents in the rural fields of Texas to today being the CEO of Applied Concepts Creativity. www.appliedconceptscreativity.com and her email is connieharryman@att.net. her journey to success has taken her many places.

I asked her what advice would she give to others, and below were just a few of her answers.

Read everything you can to gain virtual experience.

Talk to people you admire, tell them you admire them and why, and ask for their input on various

      options.

    Surround yourself with successful people

Get your education, learn work skills.

If you want something to come true in your future life, than you have to initiate it, you have to make  a

plan, and then every single day take one small step towards your goal.

Always volunteer to be the leader, it is easier than you think.

Read about future trends, and then go get the skill set you need to find the new jobs or clients in the

      new economy.

She also said some of the tools that she used and still uses to accelerate her success was:

She learned how and still develops a written plan to achieve her goals.

    Time Management skills.

Flexibility, having a plan B is a beautiful thing.

She has learned to use language and put words together like:

        Exploring my options,

What is your philosophy about  ______

        How do you approach _____________?

These are great as it gets the person to engage in the conversation with you.

I SHOWED UP two years ago at a WITI (Women In Technology) conference in Santa Clara and that is how I met Connie. She is someone you also might want to connect with as she is also a person that loves to help women step out of the box into success and has lots of wisdom.. Her email is connieharryman@att.net and her phone is 864-527-5930. She is truly a rare jewel and I am honored that we are also friends.

She like me also feels it is so important for all of us to learn all about Social Networking as it is here to stay,  Perhaps 2010 you have made a goal to do your own Blog, as I did in 2009. If that is a goal than I would totally like to recommend Infinity Arts www.infinityarts.com email results@infinityarts.com they are fantastic and everyone I have referred to them loves their work and they are also affordable,  so check them out as having a Blog is a great thing for you to do.

Or perhaps one of your goals is to have a radio show, whether it is once a week, every other week, or once a month as I have selected to do.  I looked at many sources out there available to do an Internet radio show but decided on using Diva Tool Box as I believe they are the best, and they make it easy for non tech people like me Check out their website at www.divatoolbox.com . Janet Powers the founder of Diva Tool Box is terrific she is there for her radio hosts and makes it so easy to do a show and again its affordable.  Her website is terrific, and there are opportunities to do articles, promote your book as well as do a radio show.  Janet helps you set it up so that all you have to do is do your show which is really pretty easy. Many people I have referred to her are now doing shows and they love her and the great opportunities Diva Tool Box affords them.

I met Janet two years ago when I was a finalist for one of the E Women Network awards and I went to their Dallas conference and SHOWED UP. As I always saying showing up is like a treasure map, and I met lots of treasures at that conference and also at the WITI conference.

I truly believe that 2010 is going to be a great year for all of us, forget the doom and gloom, read the news for opportunities, surround yourself with positive people, SHOW UP and ASK for what it is you want and need.

I already have been booked for many speaking opportunities in 2010, as well as for consulting work so for me things are moving forward.  I also have been doing PR for a few clients and always love it when I see some of my work end up in the papers, as one did this week in the San Diego Business Journal, this makes not only me happy but my clients happy as well.

I encourage all of you to become part of NAFE, www.nafe.com the largest global network for women, and sign up for their NAFE CAFE as it affords lots of great opportunities and its FREE if you are a NAFE member and you can check out the www.nafe.com for a NAFE affiliate network near you, and if there is none you can start one, call me at 888-244-4420 and I will tell you how easy it is to do.

If you are in Southern CA then you can connect with the For YOU NAFE Affiliate networks, go to www.4younetwork.org and check out where those networks meet.  I serve as the director of two of them, the Murrieta CA For You/NAFE network which meets the 2nd Wed of each month in Murrieta at Carrows at 11:30 am and the South Orange County For You/NAFE network that meets the 4th Tuesday of each month at Sarducci's Restaurant in San Juan Capistrano, CA at 6:30 pm. I invite you to come and visit us as I said SHOWING UP is a great thing to do. Each meeting has a dynamic speaker and the opportunity to network and build relationships.  We will be doing Vision Boards at the January Murrieta meeting, and the SOC meeting we have a dynamic speaker Ardice Farrow who will give us great tips to start us on our way for the new year.

One tip that I find that works for me on doing my goals is, I record them on a CD and then play it when I am driving and then I hear my own voice say what I will accomplish and I find that more powerful than writing them down, and I can update them at anytime.  Your voice telling you that you will do a certain thing is quite powerful.

I wish each of you great success in 2010 and know that I am always here to answer your questions, be your cheerleader or ??? so call me at 888-244-4420 or email me at rmotter@aol.com  Would love to hear about your SHOW UP and ASK stories for future blogs.

The Power of ASKING…what a magnificent tool

Category: It's All About Showing Up Stories

Published: Monday, November 30, 2009

Each day something wonderful happens for me or someone that I put out an ASK FOR, because I have learned that when I need something if I put it out there and ASK wonderful things happen, and so today I thought that I would share three recent ASK Stories that recently happened to show you how powerful an ASK can be.

  1. One of my members Laura Jorge of the For You/NAFE network had a slight stroke on Nov 17th and had to go to the hospital. The stroke left her right side numb, she cannot walk and also with some speech problems. The other day because she has no insurance they were just going to send her home, as they said they could not find any nursing home that offers physical therapy  to take her so they had no choice but to send her home.  What made me even angrier is that when the doctor told her he had to send her home because she had no insurance she said to him “I have no family and no one to care for me”, his response was “It’s not my problem”, well those where the wrong words for me to hear and thank heavens I am blessed with some dynamic members who have been nursing home administrators and hospital administrators. These dynamic people got on the phone and made calls and gave me all kinds of information and one of them, Carol Rock contacted a Nursing Home owner of 6 homes and shared the story and now it looks like they may take her in one of their homes.  Thank heavens for people with heart, there still are some out there. It would have been terrible to send someone home that cannot walk, hardly talk, still using a bedpan to take care of themselves, and all because they have no insurance.

Laura has worked for over 20 years and paid into the social security system and is only 56 so does not yet qualify for SS help,  but she is a human being and should be treated as one.  I was so amazed as to how many of my members also got on the cause and were making calls to people they know, and in fact we sent an email to the social worker that if they put her out on the street we would have the Media including TV and adult protection at the hospital when they forced her to leave> So I guess they did not want all that attention, as they are on the ballot to sell their hospital to a group of doctors and at this time bad PR of turning a woman out on the street that cannot walk, or talk and who has no one to care for them would not be a good thing to do,  as now they are saying it would not be safe to send her home since she has no one, a far cry from a few days ago when they said she had to go home because she has no insurance.  Her church has jumped in and they are trying to raise funds to get her Sister here from South Africa.  I have put out another great ASK for people with air miles that might want to donate some that could be turned into a ticket for her sister so let see what happens from that.

People I find are wonderful and when you ASK you also give them the opportunity to serve another.

2.   Recently a client called me and said there was a big medical conference in a town          and he wanted to send two of his people to it, but it was a little out of his budget

and he said “Robbie you know everyone, can you get some free tickets.”  Well

It seems when someone asks me for something it suddenly becomes my mission

as I love helping others. So immediately I put out an email to my members and

others I knew to see if anyone had a ticket and got no response that any one had     any tickets, Then I remembered I knew someone who owned Business Journal in the area and that perhaps they could get me three Press Passes, one for the two guys and one for me since I would also need to be there, since I was responsible for getting them there. .In a very short time she emailed me back and said it’s all arranged but you will need to write the story for our Journal and get it to me right away after the event.

Well yes I am a writer, but have not done much writing on covering a Health

Conference. My strength is in business or women’s articles, but because the

favor needed to be done so my client’s guys could get to event I said yes.

Event had over 800 people and top people from all over the world so I was

glad that I got asked to do this as I made some fantastic connections and

got to interview top health leaders not only from CA but from across the

Country as well.  They, my clients sales team also learned a lot and made

some fantastic connections, some they had been trying for months to reach.

So here you can see why the power of SHOWING UP is so important.

I also learned a lot about our health system, never dreaming that a few weeks later I would be dealing with our health system for a member. I wrote the article that ended up being a front page story that got circulated to hundred of thousands of their subscribers and there was my name as the author, and all my contact information at the end of the long article. You can view that article in the current issue of the Inland Empire Business Journal on the front page Its titled Southern CA Health Care Summit – A Look Into the Future of the Health Care Industry, by Robbie Motter. Wow it sure pays to ASK, and already the paper got calls about what a great article and several have even called me to learn more about what I do. The guys that I got into event went back to their boss my client and  told him they learned a lot from being there with me on how to work a room and become a power networker. I also had to step out of my comfort zone and write a health article which was totally new to me.

3        About two and ˝ years ago I heard a gifted young pianist name Kyle Shafiee who at that time was attending a high school in Orange Country for the Performing

Arts. He was magnificent and I thought, would it not be great if I could open the

door for this young man to meet Carlo Ponti (Sophia Loren’s son) who is the

Concert Maestro of the San Bernardino Symphony> I knew that the former

Mayor of San Bernardino,  Judith Valles also a friend,  was responsible for     bringing Carlo Ponti  to SB , and that my great friend June Durr had worked for Judith when it was being done.

So I called June and she got tickets for Kyle and his family and a friend and I

to attend his last concert for the year that year which is always the one that

has a young entertainer guest performer. Kyle was so thrilled to be able to go

and after the concert they have a champagne  reception and Kyle was able to be there and meet Carlo Ponti We had also arranged to get a CD of Kyle’s work to Carlo prior to the meeting. At the reception Carlo said to Kyle, “I am flying back to Italy tomorrow but when I return I want to audition you, but 2008 has already been filled, but we will see about having you as our guest artist for the performance in 2009. It was a dream come true for this young performer, just meeting Carlo Ponti for Kyle who was 17 at the time was a gift in itself, but to also get auditioned by him with the possibility of getting to play was more than he ever dreamed of.  When Carlo came back he did audition him and loved his passion and gave him two songs to learn and booked him for his guest for 2009.  On Nov 21st I had the honor of sitting in the audience to hear Kyle play at the San Bernardino Symphony and he was magnificent and what was more exciting was that there where more than 134 pages of music Kyle had to learn to play that night and Kyle used no music> He played it all from memory and Carlo was loving every minute of it as did the orchestra as it was a magnificent performance I was thrilled as I watched his fingers go over the keyboard it was magical.  After at the Champagne reception Carlo told my friend June who helped me get him there, how Kyle Shafiee was outstanding and we would be seeing more of him and that he planned to book him again. At this reception we also arranged to give Carlo’s assistant two more tapes of two more outstanding performers I recently came in contact with ,Cristina Fontanelli, who lives in NY who has already sung for the Boston Pops. and Leisa Breen a magnificent singer from the Palm Springs area, so who  knows, perhaps they too will be singing and performing for the San Bernardino Symphony.  And again it is starting from an ASK….

Go to Kyle’s website and hear the music yourself and learn more about this talented performer. http://www.kyleshafiee.com/cds.htm  Remember getting him there all stared with an ASK…

The morale of this is that nothing is impossible and that whatever it is you want is at your fingertips, just reach out and let people know what it is you want or need.

I have hundreds of stories like those above that have happened because I put it out there and ASKED, but it starts with you, you have to ask yourself some questions, what is it you really want and need, who do you know that you can ASK, and remember they may not be the person that can help you but perhaps it is someone in their data base that has the connection.

It is truly about SHOWING UP and the POWER is in the ASKING, start doing it and you too will see the magic that can happen.

November lots of great things happened for me because of people opening doors for me,  I did a television taping for my network that aired on a local television station and got a copy of the interview that I will be able to post on  For You Network Murrieta For You page, that door opened for me from Ruthee Goldkorn the Executive Director of the Ms. Wheelchair Ca event. I took one of my members with me Fannioe Green, so she got to experience her first Television interview as I thought how better to say how great a network is and has been for a member than to have the member share their story of what being a member has been to them.

I spoke at the Menifee Chamber this month and that opened the door for a presentation I will be doing in Dec for another group. I held a big fundraiser to benefit Ms Wheelchair CA and the money earned from the fundraiser allowed them to pay their balance for the Float they will have their winner on for the Rose Bowl Parade, I spoke for a group in Riverside,  and that opportunity came from the groups found Lisa Ramsey. I met with a corporation that I was referred to by one of my members Yvonne Navarrete, with reference to a women’s conference they will do in January and they hired me and I was able to recommend my friend and partner June Davidson as perhaps another speaker and they met with her and hired her as well.

Already Dec has much happening, I am doing a Marketing and PR workshop for the Resource Center for Non Profit Management in Riverside Dec 1st that is open to their members and others that might want to attend.

I am leaving for VA Dec 2nd to see my daughter Lori, and then will be driving to NY to attend a NAFE breakfast and will reconnect with two individuals John DePrima and Sue Schuessel that worked for me in New York 25 years ago. Reconnect with Md friends Paula Constantino, perhaps Shirley Foote, and friends in VA Jane Croskery that I have not seen for years as well as spend time with my daughter Lori and grandchildren Jessica and Joey in VA before flying back on the 8th in time to run my Murrieta For You/NAFE meeting on the 9th.

I will be doing a presentation on Dec 14th for a Youth group, and maybe attending an event on Dec 18th at the Playboy Mansion in Hollywood, and will be doing a radio interview on the 30th as well as doing my own Blog Talk Radio Show live from NY on the 6th. with my guest Connie Harryman who lives in South Carolina.

Life is wonderful and most of the things I learn about or do come from SHOWING UP and ASKING. And I am always honored when I can use SHOWING UP and ASKING to help others as well,  as my recent SHOW UP stories relate above. As it’s not about US but how we can HELP others that is important.

Until my next blog, keep SHOWING UP and ASKING doe what it is you need and want, believe me it works.

Robbie Motter says…

Category: It's All About Showing Up Stories

Published: Thursday, October 22, 2009

"Showing up is a great way to recruit new members and is the key to success for your organization"

New members bring ideas and enthusiasm to an organization.  However as demands on our time increases, so does the competition for membership.  If everyone out there is seeking members, how can your group be successful?

I.  How Many Members Do You Want?

A.  Set a goal – How many members do you want to bring in each month?

                      -- During the coming year?

B.  Establish meeting dates, times and formats which are especially appropriate for first

time prospective members – first impressions are so important!

C.  Prepare to explain your organization’s mission or purpose – in brief easy-to-

      understand terms.

II.  Ask Yourself Some Questions

A.  "Should prospective member meetings feature guest speakers, training, or special

entertainment?  Should they resemble business-as-usual or be strictly a Prospective

      Member Open House?"

B.  "What are the benefits of membership?"

C.  "What are the duties of members/volunteers?  How much time is required?  What

      level of commitment is expected?"

D.  "Are there any special talents or skills which the organizations particularly needs or

      values?"

E.  "How were members (or volunteers) previously recruited?"

III.  Develop a Strategy

A.  After taking the time to be thoughtful about your organization, you will be in a better

position to really know just what type of membership you have and what type of

people would make your group perform even better.  You will recruit more

effectively once you are able to provide meaningful information abut your group to

      membership prospects.

B.  Organizations too often use a "shotgun"approach which amounts to little more than

bodies filling a meeting hall.  Truly successful groups have diverse memberships,

allowing for more creativity, increased access to the community or area served, and a

generally more positive group experience for everyone involved.

IV.  Establish a Membership Recruitment Committee

In order to be most effective, the recruiting process needs to involve your entire organization.  Current members should be excited about being part of your group; current members should want to help select new members.  There are a few steps that you can take to ensure that the recruiting process is successful and meaningful.

A.  Review literature (handouts and flyers as well as brochures) describing your group.  If

there is either a large quantity of marketing materials to review – or too little – set up

a committee to handle their creation or revision.

B.  Is your organization adequately and accurately described?  (Tip: you might be

surprised how many people discard or ignore information containing typing errors or

      misspelled words.)

C.  Is a name and phone number provided, and is it the appropriate person to handle

      membership inquiries?

D.  Remember that whatever you give prospective members is often your organizations’

most tangible contact with them and their associates.

E.  Is your association or organization listed on meetingsandmixers.com or other online

calendars and directories?  If not, go to their sites and enter your network and meeting

dates.  Make sure this listing is revised after new officers are elected and whenever a

phone number or mailing address changes.

V.  Use "the Power of the Press"

Generate press releases.  Let your community know about upcoming meeting dates and events sponsored by your organization.  (Tip: one of the positions in your organization could be one responsible solely for “public relations.”)

A.  List publications – weekly as well as daily papers – serving your area.  Don’t hesitate

to call and ask if they will publicize your membership drive.

B.  Compile a list of local radio and television stations.  Many broadcast public service

announcements ("PSAs") free of charge.  Track down "community access" cable

channels which exist to inform your local community.

C.  Your "public relations" person or team should develop contacts at those publications

and broadcasting stations which recognize the importance of community affairs.

Then you can reach your regular contacts at a moment’s notice when you have a

celebrity guest speaker or a special event.

VI.  Showing Up and Networking at the Group to Group Level

Check out other organizations and events in your area.  Does the Chamber of Commerce sponsor a business mixer?  How about street fairs, festivals, etc.?  Such events provide an opportunity to inform new people about your group.  It’s the type of people you need regularly to attend a certain public function, organize a team of your members to be there with your recruitment literature.

VII.  It’s the Most Powerful Resource You Have!

A.  Most importantly, use the most powerful resource you have – your current members!

The best way to get new people is by word of mouth through experienced participants

      and their family members.

B.  Make sure everyone knows they are always welcome to bring guests to meetings and

      functions.

C.  When you sense some prodding is needed, ask members to turn in a list of the people

they know who might be suited for your organization.  Follow-up by scheduling an

Open House or similar "prospective member" event.

D.  Don"t be afraid to rely on current members.  This is not a chore for members who are

proud of their affiliation with your organization.

VIII.  How to Get Current Members Involved

A.  Ask members to list 5 reasons they enjoy being part of your club.

B.  Put members names in your club newsletter in recognition of their efforts to introduce

      new people to your group.

C.  Make it fun!  Start a membership drive.  Divide your current members into teams and

let their competitive spirit accelerate your club growth.  The losing team can provide

a barbecue for the winners – you’ll not only increase membership, this will also

      strengthen friendships within the club.

D.  Learn more about your members.  Develop a “rap” sheet for everyone to fill out.

You’ll discover you have a group with hidden talents and diverse interest.  There is

no better way to get more members than to make the ones you have an important part

of your organization.  They’ll tell their friends without even being asked if you take

the time to make being a member a rewarding experience.  You can also benefit by

knowing which members are really closet graphic artists just dying to do the artwork

      for newsletters and brochures.

E.  Ask, ask, ask.  The Power is in the Asking!  My experience has always been that some

people are afraid to jump in and volunteer, especially if others in the club are always

quick to do so.  They may feel unwanted and not needed, which of course is never the

case!  ASK everyone to be a part of something.  Include a choice of different

activities on sign-up sheets – people who don’t want to be a part of the fundraising

committee might jump at a chance to recruit speakers or to organize a pot luck picnic,

      etc.

F.  Educate.  We have all been part of a club, association or organization that we knew

very little about.  You cannot expect uninformed members to recruit additional

members effectively.  Keep no secrets – if you require an initiation fee, every current

member should know what that money is used for.  Their friend might ask, and if

your member isn’t sure it might not only leave the prospective member with doubts, it

might also create them in the current member’s mind.

IX.  Now Get Out There and RECRUIT and SHOW UP

A.  Making your organization successful requires persistence, organization, and more

than just a little hard work.  Increasing membership in your club takes effort from

everyone, but the rewards are well worth it.

B.  In today’s society, service clubs provide children and other less privileged individuals

with opportunities they would otherwise never experience, while professional

organizations offering mentoring, friendships and networking can prove to be

invaluable on the path to a better and more rewarding career.

C.  Whatever the purpose of your group, it would benefit from a larger, more diverse, and

more involved membership.  People join and volunteer for a wide variety of reasons.

Make sure that you recognize and encourage your members, old and new.  Start

organizing.  Get the word out.  Communicate with your membership and SHOW UP.

X.  Most Importantly, BEGIN TODAY!

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO BUILD YOUR BRAND AND NAME?

Category: It's All About Showing Up Stories

Published: Tuesday, September 15, 2009

In today's world it is all about building RELATIONSHIPS, and what a better way to do that then to SHOW UP on line and in person. People say to me "Yes, Robbie, that's true, but I am too busy, I have too much work to do, the economy is not good", as well as hundreds of other excuses.

I have more clients this year than I have had in a long time and you know why? Yes its because I SHOW UP at lots of places and get to meet lots of great people that open the doors for me to meet so many other positive and influential people. It really is like magic, but in order to make the magic happen it starts with you. Making an investment of your time, energy and yes money to pay to attend events and meetings is the key.

Just this last month I showed up at a Street Fair in Pasadena and met decision makers from a variety of industries that I could share with my clients who are into those industries I also got to support the Ms Wheelchair CA group who had a booth there and who are the most dynamic and inspiring women and I am so thrilled that I had the opportunity to get to know them better. I attended a fantastic Cabaret SHOW in North Hollywood that the first runner-up in the Ms Wheelchair CA was the star of and she was terrific, I went to another launch of a video at the Century Plaza Hotel in LA and met many people but one was a fantastic woman who does documentaries and I shared an idea I had and she said she might be interested in donating her time to do it. Wow, had I not shown up I would not have met her and the others including the CEO/President of the Christopher Reeve Foundation. Since I also am working on starting a foundation, The Movement Therapy Foundation, for a client of mine, getting to meet this dynamic man was great and we talked about our new foundation as well, it also turned out he was from Short Hills, NJ were I used to live.

I also got to go to the Hotel SOZO in Palm Springs and see some incredible entertainment, three of whom are going to be performers for a fundraiser I am doing Nov 14th, and I met them because I SHOWED UP.

The Greek Festival in Long Beach was so much fun, greek dancing, greek food, came back with lots of business cards and got to see my friend Ruthee Goldkorn the Executive Director of Ms WHeelchair CA who had a booth there, also enjoyed eating some great Greek Food. Had been thinking of SHOWING UP at this event for years, and so when Ruthee invited me I said YES and it was well worth the long drive, plus I got to support her cause as well. If you know of a women in a wheelchair ages 21-60, married, single or divorced tell her about the opportunity to enter the Ms Wheelchair CA pageant that will be held April 2010 in Los Angeles, the only requirement other than age is that they use either a wheelchair or motorized scooter 100% of the time when outdoors. check out their website at www.mswheelchairca.org for more information. I am doing a fundraiser for this nonprofit group on November 14th at my Clubhouse in Sun City, I have an incredible lineup of over 14 entertainers, we will have a great lunch, door prizes and a few silent auction items and the funds will benefit Ms Wheelchair CA. Tickets are only $12.00 so if interested email me rmotter@aol.com and I will send you the flyer with all the information. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Another site for you to share if you know anyone in a wheelchair or suffering from movement therapy issues is www.flexiciser.com and also watch for the Movement Therapy Foundation website that will soon be launced. This is the foundation that I am working with a client to start and will be serving as the Interim Executive Director for. September is starting off with a bang, I got to be on a conference call to hear about the NEW NAFE CAFE that will soon be launching and it is going to be wonderful and will offer all our NAFE members globally the opportunity to have their BIO and information about them and their products or services as well as their photo for all the other NAFE members across the country to see, and also to interact with them as well.

Watch the www.nafe.com website for more information and to sign up when it launches. You must be a NAFE member, but their membership is so low only $39.00 a year and you get lots of benefits so check out the site. I have loved being their Western and Mid Atlantic Regional Coordinator and have been doing it for over ten years, and have met some dynamic women all over the world because of being a member. I also decided I will start doing a once a month radio show, which will be the first Sunday of each month at 6:00pm PST and also can be picked up globally at their time. The show will be on the Diva Tool Box Radio and I will be looking for guests to be on my show, so it could be YOU; if interested send me an email about your topic, send me your bio and photo and I will see how it works into the format for my SHOW. I am calling it DIVA Monthly Strategies for Success by Queen Diva and Master Connector Robbie Motter. Will let you know when the info is set up to connect with me and also listen to the SHOW. If you miss the live show you will also be able to go on line at your convenience and tune in .

Showed up also as a seat filler for the UNCF Evening of Stars which honored Lionel Ritchie. This Show will air in January on BET TELEVISION; don't miss it as the entertainment was unbelievable. Also got to SHOW UP as a Seat Filler for the Reba McIntire Taping for a Christmas Special she is doing with Andrea Bocelli and David Foster; this will air in December on PBS and it is going to be great. Did an online call and spoke to all the WAKE UP WOMEN authors across the country on Maximizing Virtual Social Networks and Terristoral Networking Communities.

I also recommended to the people on my call, my favorite vendor Infinity Arts, who designed my BLOG, they are great, in fact I have referred them to several clients who cannot believe how great their work is so if you need a website or a blog they are the ones to call. My contact is Michael Hooper at www.infinityarts.com/results , he is so great to work with and their work is outstanding.

Whether we like it or not social networking is here to stay and we ALL need to be involved in it, especially using Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Ecademy and others. I am on 59+ social networks and have made some great connections and gotten some great business from it as well.

What social networks are you on? If NONE now is the time to get started; its not hard and the results are great for YOU and YOUR business.

I attended the Murrieta For You meeting and got to present their outgoing Director Sue Lopez with a bunch of beautiful pink roses to honor the magnificent job she has done as Director; got to meet some incredible guests and hear an incredible speaker Robb Braun of the Leadership Exchange, also Sue pinned me as the new incoming Director for Murrieta. Ran the South Orange County For You meeting at Sarducci's in San Juan Capistrano and we had a great speaker and lots of great guests and members who SHOWED UP.Both meetings had some incredible women and some great networking. Did you know that belonging to an organization is a great way to meet people and to start building your brand and your name? I recommend NAFE www.nafe.com and the For You Network www.4younetwork.org For You is a NAFE Affiliate network and NAFE is the largest global women's network . In today's world we must start thinking out of the Box as it is not business as usual.

I love SHOWING UP, below are some of the places I will be SHOWING UP in September. I am excited about getting to SHOW UP at the Riverside YWCA's Women of Achievement awards and found out they are also honoring past winners, of which I am one. So, that is exciting and this event usually gets a very large attendance. This is happening on Sept 17th in Riverside. For more information on tickets etc., call the YWCA at 951-687-9922. On the 19th I am going to be at the Career Builders Booth at Crystal Cathedral at their Community Fest, come on out and SHOW UP; you never know who you will meet. For more information on this event send an email to Laura Jorge lofjorge@yahoo.com On the 20th I will be in my formal at the Emmy's waiting for all my favorites to win their EMMY. There is another amazing SHOW at the CAFE SOZO in Palm Springs on the 23rd of Sept which I plan to attend, in fact I believe they have some sort of a show every Wednesday night and it starts at 7:30 pm, the entertainment is great and you can order dinner, snacks or just a drink, its up to you, no charge for the SHOW.. I will be back in Palm Springs on September 25th as an Empowering Leader for the Amazing Women's Day that is being held at the Hilton; for more information use this link:http://www.profcs.com/SecureCart/SecureCart.aspx?mid=1FA6EE0A-F2C7-4807-B65F-A2C1A925BE57&pid=8e409948c089fe1f19df07a34d72d643&bn=1

On the 26th I am going to a fantastic event called the Eagle & Badge Gala at the Century Plaza Hotel which Arhtur M. Kassel and Billy Bush will host. This is a black tie event to pay tribute to some pretty unique individuals. If you are a nonprofit organization than by all means you need to SHOW UP at the Resource Center for Non Profit Management Non Profit Conference in Riverside, it is going to be great and I get to again be one of their presenters along with my good friend and partner June Davidson.

For more information on this conference call Kyra Wilson Program Director at 951-686-4402 x 162 What is exciting to me is all these places that I am SHOWING UP at; I know that I am going to meet some incredible people who will also introduce me to their incredible friends and business associates. So my line of influence globally is going to increase even more. So what's your SHOW UP story? I would love for you to share your show up stories for perhaps being included in my future blogs.
