Did You Know That Getting Nominated For An Award Is Another Great Way To Build Your Brand And Get Noticed?Category: It's All About Showing Up Stories Published: Wednesday, May 13, 2009 No matter what part of the country you live in there are organizations and associations that have events where you can get someone to nominate you or to nominate yourself for an award. Check and see if you have any local business journals in your area, as they have all sorts of nomination opportunities for men and for women, also the YWCA's, SBA (Small Business Administration), Soroptomist Organizations and so many more. Including if you do lots of volunteer work getting an award from the President to honor the volunteer work you do. Just Google organizations; also watch your local papers for announcements of upcoming awards and then take the time to do it. If you are a member of NAFE they also have an annual awards opportunity for women so watch their website as well. Over the years I have won the SBA Women's Advocate Award, an award from the YWCA, Business Journal Awards, NAFE Awards, Office Depot Business Women of the Year, Amazing Woman's Day Award, Victorious Woman, Kalon Woman, a Soroptomist award and so many more including the Presidential Award on my volunteer work of 3,000 plus hours. NO! It's not about winning awards, what it is about is getting your name out there, and building YOU and YOUR brand. When you are a nominee for any award whether you win or not, your name is listed; what you do is listed and many times your photo even appears in the local papers and if its a national award it emerges in national media as well. This is a great way to get your name and brand out there and its such a simple process. Men are better at going for the awards then women are, but I am on a mission to get women to step out and let the world know just how wonderful they are and what great work they do. Recently the LA Business Journal held their Annual "Women Who Make A Difference Awards" at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles and had over 200 nominees for some great award categories, and over 600+ people attended this event. I am proud to say that 39 of those 200 nominees were members of NAFE and the For You networks in the Southern CA area. The day started when all the nominees arrived for a VIP reception in a private beautiful room where each were presented a yellow rose and had their individual photo taken with the backdrop of a panel that said Women Who Make A Difference. Each nominee will receive FREE a copy of that photo that they can put on their website. Also they received a FREE autographed book from the Keynote Speaker that day who was Lynda Resnick and the book was entitled "Rubies in the Orchard" (how to uncover the hidden gems in your business), . They also all attended the event FREE; the tickets for the event where $125.00, and their photos, their business name and what category they were nominated for were shown constantly on a rotating board on both sides of the huge ballroom until the event started. Also their photo will be appearing in this weeks LA Business Journal as a nominee. So I would say that SHOWING UP at this event is a great thing to do as they do this event every year; so if you live in Southern CA you need to be sure that you nominate yourself or get someone to nominate you next year. Nominations open about the first of the year, go to www.labusinessjournal.com, click on events and look for the Women Who Make A Difference Awards and click nominate. Its really a very easy process and the results of what you get when you SHOW UP are terrific. We met so many dynamic women and because there were so many of us in one group and we all SHOWED UP early, we became like the greeter committee congratulating everyone that arrived when we were in the VIP reception area; so some serious power networking by the gals was taking place. One of my members June Davidson even met someone that is going to teach her how to make wine. I originally heard about this event years ago when they asked me to be a judge and I can tell you that its tough to judge this, as everyone who are nominees are so dynamic and are doing so much with their lives. After seeing what the event was about I started sharing it with my members as the place to SHOW UP at annually. Each year when I hear the winners I say to myself "Wow I better get out there and do more, and I already do a lot but they do more so it inspires me to do more". For many of my members who were there this year it was their first year and for many it was really hard for them to blow their own horn and get these nominations in, but I guess I just hounded them so much that they took the step out of the box and did it and found out it was not so difficult after all, and when they experienced the day they thanked me for making them take action. Here is one persons comment which I thought said a lot..."As always, it was another great event with Robbie and her "gang of fabulous women." Thank you for giving me the courage to put myself out there, to "show up" and to network outside of my own little sphere of influence! Wonderful things always just "seem to happen" when I jump in, but MOST of all, MOST WONDERFUL OF ALL, is being with you! You make magic wherever you go, and it's fun to experience it with you! Thanks for all that you give to us! Melinda Fouche', Nominee 2009 LA Business Journal Women Who Make A Difference Awards The FOUCHE' INSTITUTE, Turning disabilities into endless possibilities, one soul at a time!"" Murrieta, Ca. Here are some other comments:Some other great feedback from Karen Hobson, Author, Speaker and Seminar leader on SHOWING UP at the event, read what she had to say: Karen is also a FOR YOU/NAFE member of the Murrieta For You network. "It was thrilling; it was exciting thank-you for sharing the opportunity to be a part of the Los Angeles Business Journal's, Women Making a Difference awards luncheon. What an honor it was to take part as a nominee in the event. My showing up story is two parts. The first is my reluctance to go...I was having a rough week. My personal life was in the dumps so I wasn't really feeling very worthy of attending a celebration. I dragged my feet getting ready not sure I wanted to bother going. The Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles is over a hundred miles from my house...I was late and almost turned around several times during the drive. I arrived twenty minutes after the designated arrival time. WOW! I am so glad I stuck it out. I Showed Up...and attending the event gave me a new perspective on life. Every nominee was treated to a special greeting. Each of us had a picture taken for an upcoming article in the Los Angeles Business Journal. We were handed a beautiful rose and an autographed copy of the keynote speaker's book. Rubies in the Orchard by Lynda Resnick. Next stop the ballroom where the luncheon was held. Over six hundred attendees all looking glamorous with beaming smiles happy to be attending. It was sensational to see yourself and your business scroll by on the big screens for all the room to admire. I was so grateful that I persevered and showed up. I met several women who I can help in their business endeavors and I learned a valuable lesson besides. Two women at my table were suffering from negative attitude and felt compelled to share it. They were the first to arrive at the table so they selected the podium facing seats...who wouldn't given the chose...when a large man took the last seat at the table they felt compelled to admonish him for blocking their view of the stage. The poor guy was so embarrassed...the tables were all assigned it wasn't like he sat there just to bother them. Next the lunch arrived...gees these two just kept complaining. The food wasn't good enough. At that moment I realized how grateful and fortunate I was to be there. I turned to the woman next to me, "Isn't this wonderful? It's thrilling to be here. This meal beats what I paid for yesterday and the restaurant didn't even give me a petal far less a fabulous rose. What difference does it make how much of the stage we can see...it's exciting to be here don't you agree?" With that I realized my whole table was staring at me smiling and nodding their heads in agreement...well all but two. Afterward the large man at the table came over to me handed me his card and said..."I like your style. If ever I can be of service to you let me know." You never know who you'll be seated with...he's a partner in a worldwide PR firm." See I always tell you SHOWING UP is like a Treasure map and look at this treasure she found. "Great to see you in LA, so fun. Lots to follow up with and I am so thrilled you shared this with me three years ago. I wont miss a year." BarBara WhorleyBusiness Coach/ Consultant/Speaker Founder of Spotted Zebras Coaching (she was one of the gals really working the room in the VIP event I think she met all the 200 nominees and welcomed them) Dr. Cherilyn Lee the owner of Nutrimed Integrated Healthcare in LA told me, "Wow what an incredible experience being a nominee was for me and my guests and it was so exciting to be a part of such a first class event. I will not miss a year from now on, I made so many great connections, met so many new people and also got to connect with members of our For You/NAFE network that I had not met yet". She even closed her clinic for the day to attend this event. Everyone, even those that had been there for prior year events told me it was such an incredible experience for them and that they made so many great connections . Yes this event in my book is a first class event to do some power networking at , and all the nominees and guests attending are certainly some of the great women to know in Southern CA. Also the LA Business Journal and their staff do an outstanding job along with all their great sponsors to make this a first class event. The people who SHOW UP are of all ages, all ethnic backgrounds and all sizes and shapes and into a variety of business, so there is something for everyone, What is exciting also is that no one knows who the winners are until the envelope is opened and it even surprises the winners who when they see the others in their category think it will not be them and when it is, wow that is so exciting for them. So all that YOU need to do to get there next year is to go to the LA Business Journal Website and click on events and watch for when they post it to accept nominees. So I hope to see you there next year. I know I will be there and I know that many more of my members will also be there next year and the ones that where there this year plan to keep SHOWING UP... ![]() Here is a photo of all of us , sorry some were looking the wrong way. This was taken after the event, on a balcony at the hotel, but you can see what a large group of Nominees we had from NAFE/For You networks at the event, they all looked fantastic and they all had such a great time. This SHOWING UP stuff is really great... Here are the names of my friends and NAFE/FOR YOU members that stepped out of the box and got their nominations in and SHOWED UP for a memorable day. No, we did not have any winners but that's okay 'cause there is always next year. So glad I SHOWED UP at one of Karen's Blogging for Dollars Free Workshop. Once I took it I knew I needed my own blog and this is it... Pasadena For You/NAFE Network June Davidson, director, and the president of American Seminar Leaders and who works with me with the ASLA/Contacts Unlimited Speakers Bureau, and Marsh Engle the founder of Amazing Woman's Day. South Orange County For You/NAFE network, Pattie Meyers membership chair, owner of multiple companies which help you stay healthy, show you how to travel for the right price and more, who brought her beautiful daughter to the event. Also former members Laura Jorge, who helps people ghost write their books, Connie Sparks who helps people get certified to do business with the government, Gwen Thibeaux, coach, author and speaker. Gwen is also the president of the Inland Empire NAWBO group. There were others that were nominated that I did not see like Jennifer Stull from SOC who owns her own company, and Kay Presto from Rancho Cucamonga For You/NAFE network, who owns a company that makes the great ti-shirts for seniors, as well as other senior items, she is also a speaker and PR consultant. There could have been others I knew that were friends or members but just did not see them as the event was packed with tons of dynamic women and a few men to meet. I hope to see YOU at next years LA Business Journals event, you won't miss me I will be in a bright color and wearing a hat so you won't miss me, and I am sure I will again be a nominee.
